PROJECT
Due to the lead in time, no fly zones, lack of point cloud density in built up areas and significant cost of mobilising helicopter and fixed wing based LiDAR, CAPTURA proposed to SP Energy Networks Wales (SPM) the use of large UAV technology to carry out survey grade LiDAR capture for their overhead lines (OHLs).
APPROACH
CAPTURA brought together industry leading experts from the UK and Europe to carry out this trial. Over a 6 month period Captura and its partners BPI, IRIS Group and 3D Laser Mapping looked at a number of platforms and sensor configurations on the market but due to the current weight limit restrictions in the UK of 20kg it was felt a larger platform would be required to carry the high precision payload and IMU system to deliver survey grade profiling dataset.
The RiCOPTER from RIEGL was identified as the only current system that could meet the requirements as laid out by BPI. Captura, 3D Laser Mapping and IRIS Group worked for 7 months with the CAA and RIEGL to gain special permissions to fly and operate this system which sits above the 25kg here in the UK.
The purpose of the trial was to prove the LiDAR system using a UAV platform can achieve the required point cloud density and accuracies given on the BPI ALS specification:
- Required absolute accuracy: 75mm
- Required minimal point cloud density: 50 points/m2 (First pulse returns)
BENEFITS
The week trial was a huge success allowing all partners to capture enough data to compile a detailed report for SP Energy Networks and a first for the UK. The system clearly showed the advantage of been able to launch a UAV for small to medium projects or where there is a no fly zone for larger aircraft.
