NDT utility wood pole testing device
THE PROJECT
CAPTURA was approached by a working group (Cinetix & Vonaq) currently engaged in trialling a new NDT wood pole testing device with 3 UK DNO`s and the EIC, Energy Innovation Centre. They needed a user friendly GUI that could be installed on their device that could allow field inspectors to capture and test different voltages across UK networks. The NDT pole tester is a unique device that makes a quantitative and objective measurement of the strength of wooden poles. It allows Telecom and Power companies to make the condition assessment of their wooden poles making easy to plan maintenance and replacement activities.
THE APPROACH
First phase CAPTURA carried out a number of field tests with the device across all voltages and recorded this data in a field template. In the second phase we created a complete OHL catalogue of all OHL equipment and attributes detailing all sizes and weights. In phase 3 and 4 we worked very closely with the project partners to create a number of field method procedures and software design for a new GUI question set to allow the operator to configure Utilities Poles with several functions, like EHV Poles, 11kv Poles, LV Poles, Telecom Poles, and poles with mixed configuration, for example equipped with CATV and Fibre Optic cables.
THE CONCLUSION
This development was a huge success where the groups developments were added to the device smartphone app and became the standards operating procedure for the testing of utility poles in the power sector. Also from trials taken place it has shown not only the devices ability to accurately re-classify wood poles but if implemented on new pole populations when first sited it can have a dramatic effect on wood pole asset management.
