OHL 360 Streetview
Currently all OHL network operators have a commitment to carry out a safety patrol of their network. This patrol is to identify safety issues on their network which includes; condition and safety infringements, this task is usually carried out by deploying OHL trained field inspectors with electronic handheld devices. . Data is then captured in the field by the inspectors answering a specific question set devised to capture issues and the condition of the assets. This data is then returned to the network operator to be quality checked and then analysed to create health indexing reports and also drive work program.
Spherical proposal was to look at some of the latest in camera technology to see if we can;
- Reduce annual safety inspection costs to the network operator
- Increase frequency of safety patrols
- Improve data captured
CAPTURA brand Spherical approached both UK Power Networks and the EIC (Energy Innovation Center) with their new 360 streetview backpack system which allowed their field staff to capture full spherical GPS images of OHL pole routes. The project included an initial trial field feasibility study. It comprised of a selection of walk-by`s of OHL assets collecting 360 photo images and then processing into streetView web-player datasets.
The aim of this project was to set out and look at current 360 mobile mapping technology and ascertain proof of concept in its ability to meet current Google streetview outputs and allow safety inspections to be carried out from a desktop. In weeks one to three we carried out pre-site visits and pull together a number of pole routes which included LV at the roadside and HV across country. All pre-site surveys allowed us to speak with local landowners and gain permissions.
The project successfully showed that the current technology on the market can capture a 360 image of a pole in situ that is of sufficient quality to allow for a desktop safety inspection to be carried out. The project has also shown the differences in file sizes depending on the type of mode and method used to capture these images and the effects this can have on storage, integration and method of capture.
The project also showed huge potential for cost savings reducing site re-visits to ascertain further information for other work related activities.
